The director Terry Gilliam films in black and white for effect in his movie Brazil, in order to capture the soulless existence of his protagonist and to emphasize the mind-numbing nature of bureaucracy. Call it dystopia.
I visited Massachusetts' version of dystopia recently, found locally at the Watertown branch of the RMV. Imagine a job description that starts with 'serve the public' then behaviourally devolves into 'at all costs avoid eye contact, ignore every common courtesy and at all times project contempt for the public'.
It's a remarkable experience, and not for the thin-skinned. Can you imagine the customer service surveys they receive?
