Spotted in the Boston's Back Bay neighborhood recently, a contractor's truck sporting a magnetic sign proudly proclaiming "We Show Up!".
We humble craftsmen and women aspire to more than simple timeliness.
Our residential painting industry is unregulated and unlicensed--we compete in a marketplace better defined as gray or black--and while some of our competitors work above board, some play both sides, but many choose the 'easier' path: witness the sheaf of $100 bills visible in the hands of housepainters in most blue collar Boston pubs on the weekend.
Combine a lack of regulatory oversight, a concomitant aversion to legitimate business and its attendant overhead, very low barriers to entry and the result is an industry that is defined by low standards.
We've always tried to do things differently here; to wit, when we craft our 14th iteration of a timesheet to the groans of our long suffering staff, we balance on the one hand a desire never to become complacent with the tension that such fiddling can create for those hardworking men and women who actually generate revenue for us all to live on.
Suffice it to say, we will never settle for the promise 'we always show up' - we prefer to transcend mortal limitation with our own peaen to greatness - 'we'll get it right, eventually!'
